ONE ACCORD and the surge of power that was produced: When people are "of one mind," the creative capacity of that unanimity can bring about unlimited accomplishments. Nothing can stop such a people except God. In Genesis 11:1- 9 the people were of one mind and of one language, and they had a unified goal. They decided to build a city and within it a tower that would reach unto the heavens. They also wanted a name to be remembered. However, what they were doing was not of God. They were working on a project that God did not approve.
When they no longer were of one mind--when they no longer spoke the same thing--their project fell apart. When no one knew what the other was saying, confusion came in, and they began to scatter. God had touched their unity, and their project stopped.
It's no different today. We see it over and over again. Some one with a vision gathers a group of people and gets them to be of one mind and speaking the same thing and then gets them working on a massive project. But when God discovers a project and a purpose that has a wrong motive and what is not His will, He will come and touch it. All God needs to do is touch their "unity." Jeremiah 22:14-17 is a good example of a project that was started with a wrong motive.
The words "one accord" in the book of Acts shows exactly what one accord will do when God is involved. The words "one accord" have a variety of meanings such as "togetherness, with one mind, harmony, united in purpose, unanimity." There is also a meaning that refers to "at the moment of unity." There is a surge of power released spontaneous in its action that produces the desired result: a power surge. Consider the thermostat: when the room temperature reaches the same setting on the thermostat, there is a power surge of electricity that either turns on or off the furnace. At the moment of unity there is a power surge. We must remember this. When the heart, mind and soul of the believers reach a "point of unity" and when they are in harmony with God's setting, there will be a power surge, and things will happen. I
THE POWER SURGE IN THE BOOK OF ACTS
Acts 1:14 "They all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication." The POWER SURGE that came released a revelation that there was something that needed to be made right. Acts 1:16-26--Those that gathered in one accord were not afraid to make things right. Very often people pray for revival and when the Holy Spirit begins to manifest a power surge that reveals things that are not right between members in the church, they leave rather than obeying the Spirit of God. The Spirit will reveal the need for forgiveness, for repentance of sin, for the rectifying of wrong doings. If we want God's Pentecost we must do what the Spirit reveals. Jesus said, "No man having put his hand to the plough and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." (Luke 9:62) Every believer wants to be fit for the kingdom of God, but so many are not fit because they never make things right when they hold unforgiveness. Being in one accord for revival will bring the surge of power by God's Holy Spirit for the purpose of making peace between brothers and sisters that are in the church.
Acts 2:1-4 "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place." The POWER SURGE was seen in the releasing of the Holy Spirit. And what a release! The presence of God filled the house where they were meeting. The sound that came with the Spirit was like the sound of a mighty wind. Cloven tongues that resembled the flames of fire sat upon each of them. All were filled with the Spirit. The whole congregation, not just one or two, was touched by the Spirit at the same time. They spoke in known languages. Being in one accord did it. Without being critical, when was the last time you saw a whole congregation touched by the Spirit? I mean, everybody. Let's plan to be in one accord when we gather. The Lord wants to manifest power surge in our midst.
Acts 2:46 "And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with singleness of heart." The POWER SURGE here is the releasing of the spirit of fellowship and communion. These Christians were "turned on, not off." The more Christians meet together, the stronger the bond of fellowship. They were praising God and had favor with all the people. They were not criticizing or condemning. They were not ostracizing people according to race, color, status or age groups or affluence. I read some time ago a phrase written by the late Sydney Harris that every human being has four colors in their skin: white, yellow, red and black; only the proportions differ in different races. This is one power surge that every assembly needs.
Acts 4:23-24 "And being let go, they went to their own company and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord and said, "Lord, behold their threatening." The POWER SURGE here was the giving of boldness to speak the Word of God. There was more. God refilled them with the Holy Ghost. They were all refreshed and anointed by the Spirit. When Christians are one, they are a detriment to the devil's kingdom. This is one power surge that is needed today to enable the leadership to proclaim the Word with boldness against the works of evil by the godless society. When the believers are not in one accord, there is compromise. There is very little separation from the world. Many who believe in Jesus Christ are partners with the devil because they lie, cheat, steal and are filled with immorality and a whole lot more. "Sins are always found out." Many years ago a man in our assembly wondered why I was not using him in the church services. He was saved in an evangelistic campaign where the evangelist ordained the new converts as ministers right away. The Lord gave me a vision of him hiding up in a tree behind the leaves and branches. As I approached the tree, the tree was filled with poisonous snakes, and he was right in the midst of them. Later I discovered that he was involved in adultery and read pornographic magazines. Did I use him? No way. When the Lord found him out, he left the church and others followed him. Yes, we need to be in one accord to produce the power surge that brings conviction of sin and bold preaching.
Acts 5:12 "And they were all in one accord in Solomon's porch." The POWER SURGE in this scripture was that the Spirit released the leadership to do signs, wonders and miracles. Not only that but "a great fear of the Lord came upon the people." How do you describe the fear of the Lord? Psalm 16:8 is the best answer that I can give you at this moment: "I have set the Lord always before me, because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved." David feared the loss of God's presence. As you read on in Psalm 16 you will find what the fear of the Lord will do. You will find a life filled with gladness, a heart that is free from condemnation, your "glory" (tongue) filled with rejoicing, your physical body at peace and rest, sickness stays away because your guilt is removed, you are saved from the wrath of God and eternal hell, you are shown the paths of life, and you experience the fullness of blessing that is in God. The fear of God forced the believers to dwell in one accord. The one accord produced a power surge in the leadership and enabled them to do what God wanted done. There is very little fear of God today, and for sure no one fears today's preachers.
Acts 8:6 "And the people with one accord gave heed to the things which Phillip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did." The POWER SURGE evangelized Samaria. Evangelism is more than just winning people to Christ; it is also the cleansing of the city from demons and the delivering of people from demonic possession and getting the sick set free from diseases. Great joy came into the city. Nothing like this is happening in our cities today. Evangelists come and go; nothing happens. Why? Because most of them are called just to minister in one or two meetings. The "evangelist" is viewed like a horse in a corral: "Let's see his performance before we buy him." The Lord has never set the date for the removal of the evangelist from Ephesians 4:11. I saw a title the other day which sums up what I just said. "Pastors are trying to teach eggs to fly before they are hatched." The churches of today are not producing the needed "Phillips." Note Acts 6:1-8. The men of faith and of the Holy Ghost were in the congregation. We are not seeing this as much as we should be. Could it be that it is because we are not seeing this in the pulpit? Being in one accord can produce men and women of faith and power. The power surge did it.
Acts 15:25 "It seemed good to us, being assembled in one accord to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul." The POWER SURGE here sent chosen men into the harvest field with established missionaries. The local church at Jerusalem sent "chosen and qualified" men to gain experience under experienced men. I'm sure the local church supplied the necessary funds, too. Today, most are left to find their own financial support and transportation. The results of this are that many men and women are wasting away and are discouraged. For lack of accord men and women waste away. In Zechariah 10: 1-6 a power surge came by the out-pouring of the rain (Holy Spirit), and this produced "men to be supports and stays." (Moffatt)
Conclusion: "One accord" produces a "power surge." Nothing can stop a people whose faith is in God and who abide in one accord. The Holy Spirit will create abilities never before dreamed of. Accomplishments abound when people dwell in one accord. Should we pray for the "one accord"? We only need to "do it," and we need to "be it." There is enough knowledge about unity and harmony. It's the doing that's lacking.
